Catnip oil repels mosquitoes as effectively as DEET, study finds

New research shows that essential oil extracted from catnip — the plant famously loved by cats — repels mosquitoes just as effectively as DEET, the most widely used active ingredient in insect repellents. The active compound is nepetalactone. The finding offers a natural alternative to chemical-based mosquito protection during the summer season.
