New research on Neanderthal infant remains shows that these extinct relatives of modern humans developed far more rapidly in early life than we do today. Their large skulls likely caused severe complications during childbirth, potentially contributing to the species' extinction. The rapid growth rate also meant Neanderthal children were considerably larger and heavier than modern babies.
