Disney's live-action Moana remake opens far below $70m tracking forecast

While box-office tracking pointed to an opening weekend haul in the $70 million range, Disney's live-action Moana remake came in much lower. The timing of the movie's release, on the heels of Toy Story 5 and Minions & Monsters , might have had a role to play in its underperformance. Family audiences have plenty to choose from, and another Moana movie so close after the last one isn't going to be a priority. Remember, Disney transformed a planned streaming series midway through production into the feature-length Moana 2 , which grossed more than $1 billion worldwide less than two years ago. Plus, the original Moana , which has become a sensation on Disney+, is only a decade old.
