These cosmetic ingredients can cause skin burns in the sun — watch out in summer
In summer, certain chemical ingredients in cosmetics combined with UV radiation can trigger photo-sensitisation reactions, causing burns and skin discolouration. Particular risks come from citrus essential oils, St John's wort and some perfume compounds. Phototoxic reactions differ from photoallergic ones — the former appear faster and require no prior sensitisation.
