Tiananmen Square: history, the 1989 massacre and what it looks like today
Tiananmen Square in central Beijing, just in front of the Forbidden City, measures roughly 800 metres by 300 metres and is one of the world's largest public squares. In 1989 it became the site of a military crackdown on protesters that was broadcast around the world. Today the square hosts state ceremonies and military parades and is open to tourists, though under close surveillance.
