"Hobbit" humans of Flores likely wiped out by volcanic eruption, study finds

A study published in Communications Earth & Environment presents new evidence on the extinction of Homo floresiensis, the miniature hominids nicknamed "hobbits" who lived on the Indonesian island of Flores. Researchers conclude that a volcanic eruption, not contact with modern humans, was responsible for the species' disappearance. The findings could resolve one of paleoanthropology's longest-standing mysteries.
