Over 50,000 Sherman Tanks Built – Why Almost None Survive Today
More than 50,000 M4 Sherman tanks were produced during World War II, making them one of the most numerous armoured vehicles ever built. Despite that scale, surviving examples are extremely rare today – most were scrapped after the war through government metal-recovery programmes. The deliberate destruction of so many historically significant vehicles is what makes their scarcity so frustrating.
