NASA satellites watch new volcanic island form north of Papua New Guinea

An underwater volcanic eruption is unfolding north of Papua New Guinea in one of the world's most poorly mapped ocean basins. NASA satellites have detected steam plumes, ash, thermal hotspots and vast pumice rafts, suggesting magma is rising close to the ocean surface. Scientists are monitoring the event closely as it could result in the birth of a brand-new island.
