Mini-universe shows time emerging; scientists thicken Arctic ice

A physicist created a mini-universe using a Bose-Einstein condensate — thousands of atoms merged into a single quantum object near absolute zero — to watch time emerge inside an isolated quantum system. The experiment revealed time speeding up, slowing down and even stopping. This week scientists also thickened Arctic ice and NASA upgraded its quantum laboratory on the International Space Station.
