Belgian 83-year-old hospitalised for itchy skin turned out to have a rare form of syphilis

An 83-year-old man in Belgium presented to hospital with unilateral facial-nerve palsy, fever, anaemia and an enlarged spleen. After testing negative for a range of viruses including HIV and hepatitis, doctors eventually diagnosed him with a rare secondary form of syphilis. The case highlights how deceptive the symptoms of syphilis can be, particularly in elderly patients.
