Ali Ağca: Who Is the Man Who Shot Pope John Paul II Today?

On 13 May 1981 at 5:17 PM in St. Peter's Square, Mehmet Ali Ağca shot Pope John Paul II. Born in 1958 into a poor Turkish family in the country's southeast, he turned to petty theft and smuggling from a young age. After the shooting he shouted "I only, I only" — a phrase whose exact meaning remains unexplained. Ağca is still alive and has spoken of a divine plan behind the assassination attempt.
