11 July 1943: UPA attacked nearly 100 villages in the peak of the Volhynia genocide

On 11 July 1943, units of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) attacked nearly 100 Polish villages in Volhynia in the climactic phase of the genocide. Historian Prof. Grzegorz Motyka explains that the extreme cruelty of the crimes was deliberate — intended to conceal their organised, premeditated nature. Historians stress that a death sentence was effectively issued against every Pole living in the region at the time.
