Portugal heatwave kills over 200 people in first week of July

Extreme heat in Portugal during the first week of July 2026 caused the deaths of more than 200 people, mostly elderly. The regions of Minho and Alentejo were the hardest hit. Emergency services confirmed the death toll as the heatwave continued to grip the country.
