Before the World Cup, FIFA promised the expanded continental tournament was designed to minimise team travel. In practice, France has covered only about 820 km throughout the entire tournament without changing time zones even once. Meanwhile, one European team has had to travel more than 8,000 km — over ten times the French distance — exposing the uneven distribution of match venues.
