Orbiting sphere delivers most precise test yet of Einstein's frame-dragging prediction

A team led by physicist Ignazio Ciufolini of the Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics has achieved the most accurate measurement yet of the Lense-Thirring effect around Earth — the warping of spacetime caused by a rotating mass, as predicted by Einstein's general theory of relativity. The measurement was made using an orbiting sphere acting as a laser mirror. The result substantially reduces previous uncertainty in quantifying the terrestrial frame-dragging effect.
