Study: AI fiction is easy to detect because it's formulaic and preachy

Researchers at the University of Maryland and Google DeepMind analysed more than 50,000 AI-generated short stories and found they are easy to detect due to formulaic, single-track plots and heavy moralising — not just typical AI tells like overuse of em-dashes. Human stories feature more moral ambiguity and greater temporal complexity, whereas AI fiction over-explains themes and wraps up neatly. The study found model-specific patterns: Claude produces flat event escalation, GPT overuses dream sequences, and Gemini defaults to external character description.
