EU: Instagram and Facebook May Violate Digital Services Act Over Addictive Design

The European Commission has issued preliminary findings that Instagram and Facebook may violate the Digital Services Act through design features engineered to maximise user engagement, such as infinite scroll and autoplay. If confirmed, Meta could be forced to redesign key parts of both apps across Europe. The company can still challenge the findings before a final ruling, but faces fines of up to 6% of its global annual revenue if found non-compliant.
