EU threatens Meta with massive fines over addictive Facebook and Instagram features

The European Commission has preliminarily found that Meta failed to adequately assess the addiction risks of features such as auto-play, infinite scroll and highly personalised content recommendations on Facebook and Instagram. The EC said these features push users, including minors and vulnerable adults, into an "autopilot mode" that fuels compulsive use. Meta now faces the prospect of massive fines if it does not make significant changes.
