Trees stop growing in summer heat, upending climate change models

Researchers from the United States, Europe and Argentina have found that some trees stop growing during peak summer heat, a discovery that could upend current climate models. Existing models assume forests continuously absorb CO₂, but if trees curtail growth — and thus carbon uptake — in hot weather, forests may be far less effective as a climate buffer than previously thought.
