New York City bans deceptive subscriptions and junk fees from 1 October

New York City will become the first US city to ban deceptive subscription practices and junk fees, with the rule taking effect on 1 October 2025. Companies that fail to provide a simple cancellation method face fines of $525 per user subscription, plus back fees and additional penalties. The rule targets gym memberships, streaming services and other recurring charges.
