Dorsoduro: Venice's most artistic neighbourhood built on solid ground
Dorsoduro, whose name means "hard ridge" in Italian, is the only Venetian district built on naturally compact clay — a geological advantage that attracted settlers long before pilings were driven elsewhere. Today it is a university quarter known for its narrow lanes, art galleries and authentic neighbourhood feel, offering a quieter alternative to Venice's tourist hotspots.
