Mount Etna may belong to a rare fourth category of volcano, new study finds
A new study proposes that Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano, is fuelled by ancient pockets of magma pushed upward through cracks formed by shifting tectonic plates. If confirmed, Etna would belong to a rare fourth category of volcano, distinct from the three classic formation types. The finding suggests that processes previously linked only to small submarine eruptions can generate much larger volcanoes.
