São Paulo's AI surveillance system accused of racial profiling
São Paulo has rolled out Smart Sampa, the world's largest city-operated facial recognition system, ostensibly to fight crime. The AI platform is now at the centre of a growing scandal after being accused of racial profiling. While India, China, Hong Kong and the UK have introduced similar technologies, no city operates surveillance on the same scale as São Paulo.
