EU orders Meta to remove autoplay and infinite scroll from Instagram and Facebook

The European Commission has ordered Meta to overhaul the addictive design of Instagram and Facebook under the Digital Services Act, or face fines of up to 6% of global revenue. The Commission specifically demanded that autoplay and infinite scroll be disabled by default, effective screen-time breaks be introduced, and the engagement-maximising recommendation algorithm be modified. The ruling comes days before an EU expert panel is set to issue recommendations on a minimum age for social media use.
