Bears overwhelm Finnish cities as hunting ban fuels population surge

Police in eastern Finland have received hundreds of reports of bears entering populated areas since the start of 2025, already surpassing the fewer than 200 cases recorded throughout all of 2024. The bear population has been growing since 2023, when appeals suspended hunting permits outside reindeer herding zones. Emergency services are increasingly strained by the volume of interventions.
