Flores Hobbits Scavenged Elephants Hunted by Komodo Dragons, Study Finds
Anthropologist Elizabeth Veatch of the University of Tübingen and her colleagues found that Homo floresiensis — nicknamed Hobbits — likely scavenged pygmy elephant carcasses left by Komodo dragons rather than hunting the animals themselves. The Hobbits lived on the island of Flores until around 60,000 years ago alongside the dragons, dwarf elephants and giant rats. The findings could revise assumptions about which hominin species first ventured beyond Africa.
