Microsoft cuts over half of id Software staff — Carmack: "My faith in them hasn't aged well"

Microsoft has laid off 136 employees at id Software, the Doom studio co-founded by John Carmack in 1991, reportedly more than half of its total headcount. The cuts came just as the studio released an expansion for Doom: The Dark Ages. Carmack responded on X, saying his earlier statement that "Microsoft will probably be a good steward of the brand" had not aged well, and suggested id Software was likely a "marginal business" from Microsoft's perspective, propped up by Minecraft revenues.
