Experiment confirms special relativity warps chemical bonds in bismuth molecule
Scientists have used a charged bismuth-carbon molecule to directly observe for the first time how Albert Einstein's special relativity reshapes chemical bonds. Relativistic effects — previously treated largely as a theoretical consideration in chemistry — were shown to measurably alter molecular structure. The findings could have implications for the chemistry of heavy elements.
