EU lawmakers green-light negotiations on the digital euro
European Parliament lawmakers have cleared the path for formal negotiations on the digital euro, a central bank digital currency (CBDC) for the eurozone. The project is aimed at reducing the EU's reliance on US-based payment systems such as Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The digital euro would be issued by the European Central Bank and function as legal tender.
