Milky Way is larger, heavier and more lopsided than previously thought

Scientists have found that two of the Milky Way's major spiral arms — the Perseus arm and the Outer arm — are much farther from Earth than previously estimated, based on echoes of distant cosmic explosions. The discovery suggests our galaxy may be larger and heavier than thought, and its shape more asymmetric. Astronomers say the findings could require a significant revision of current galactic models.
