Fake Nigerian government agency allocated 1.3 billion naira in budget

A fictitious federal body, the PFIPC, was allocated 1.3 billion naira (£705,248) in Nigeria's 2026 budget, triggering a political storm ahead of January's general election. The fraud came to light in October when President Tinubu's chief of staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, reported to police that his signature, official seals and reference numbers had been forged by Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew. President Tinubu has ordered an investigation into the affair amid renewed scrutiny of corruption in Africa's largest democracy.
