NASA's Curiosity rover photographs sulfur crystals — a first on Mars

NASA's Curiosity rover accidentally crushed a rock on 30 May 2024, revealing sulfur crystals — the first ever seen on Mars. Days later, a camera on its robotic arm captured a close-up image of the fragments. A paper in Science proposes the sulfur formed roughly 3 billion years ago when magma deep beneath the Martian surface released gases or fluids that deposited sulfur on the planet's crust.
