Permanent magnets could shield astronauts from solar radiation in deep space
A preprint study by Valerio Parisi and a team of Italian and German researchers, posted on arXiv, examines whether permanent magnets could deflect deadly solar and cosmic radiation threatening astronauts on deep-space missions. Prolonged exposure causes central nervous system damage and cancer even at relatively low levels. Existing solutions — passive water shells and active superconducting magnets — have significant limitations that permanent magnetic fields could potentially overcome.
