Soft robotic heart mimics HFpEF to help researchers crack mysterious condition

Scientists have built a soft robotic heart that can actively tighten or relax its artificial muscles to mimic heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), described June 1 in Nature Communications. HFpEF — where the heart pumps normally but is too stiff to refill properly — affects over 3 million Americans and accounts for roughly half of all heart failure cases. Researchers hope the device will accelerate the development of targeted treatments for the poorly understood condition.
