Gauge theory rewrites thermodynamics maths after 200 years

Physicists are applying gauge theory — a mathematical framework already used to describe quantum fields — to rewrite the foundations of thermodynamics for the first time in roughly 200 years. The approach aims to give the laws governing heat and work a more rigorous mathematical grounding. Classical thermodynamics has long lacked the formal mathematical structure of other modern physics theories.
