Toxic silver-cheeked toadfish invades Mediterranean, threatening Greece's coast
Lagocephalus sceleratus, a toxic pufferfish species native to the Indo-Pacific, has spread through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean, now found from Cyprus to Italy and Spain. Its powerful beak-like jaws can bite through bone and metal, and bites cause deep wounds requiring immediate medical attention. The fish's flesh contains tetrodotoxin, one of nature's deadliest poisons; the Greek Red Cross issued a public warning in June urging anyone bitten to seek emergency care.
