Parkinson's Breakthrough: Stem Cells Transplanted into Humans for the First Time
Researchers from Lund University, Skåne University Hospital and the University of California have conducted the world's first human trials in which stem cells were implanted into the brains of Parkinson's patients to restore lost dopamine-producing neurons. Current treatments — medication and neurostimulation — progressively lose effectiveness and cause side effects. The cell therapy aims to address the root cause rather than merely managing symptoms.
