31 ancient quasars from 670 million years after the Big Bang baffle scientists
Astronomers have discovered 31 of the oldest known quasars, including the two earliest ever detected, shining when the universe was only about 670 million years old. These incredibly bright objects are powered by supermassive black holes billions of times the mass of the Sun. Their existence challenges scientific understanding of how such enormous black holes could have formed so quickly after the Big Bang.
