Magdalena Guzik wins Grand Prix of "Powiększenie" film criticism contest for essay on Wajda's "The Conductor"
The 11th edition of the "Powiększenie" film criticism contest, held under the banner of the Andrzej Wajda Year, awarded its Grand Prix to Magdalena Guzik for her essay on Wajda's 1979 film "The Conductor". Guzik's text explores how Wajda pits two conductors against each other — one wielding a baton, the other the invisible hand of Communist Party power. The film starred John Gielgud as Lasocki, a world-famous Polish-born conductor returning to a provincial orchestra.
