Scientists: Cloud Seeding Could Weaken Extreme El Niño Events

A team from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, led by Kate Ricke and Jessica Wan, used computer simulations to test whether cloud modification could weaken extreme El Niño events. Their starting point was Australia's 2019–2020 "Black Summer" wildfires, whose smoke injected aerosols into the atmosphere that interacted with clouds. Simulations suggest deliberately increasing such aerosols could reduce sea surface temperature rises and mitigate the destructive effects of super El Niño episodes.
