JWST reveals massive galaxies stopped forming stars far earlier than expected

The James Webb Space Telescope has revealed that many massive galaxies in the early Universe had already stopped forming stars hundreds of millions of years sooner than scientists previously thought. New research analysing the morphology of these "quenched" galaxies found that previously hidden galactic mergers were responsible for halting star formation. JWST's ability to detect red-shifted light from distant galaxies is enabling these discoveries.
