Piccioli's Balenciaga couture debut brings colour and sculpture to the storied house
Pierpaolo Piccioli, former creative director of Valentino, presented his first haute couture collection for Balenciaga after nine months of preparation. The collection drew inspiration from a 1961 Balenciaga gown, Spanish Golden Age painters such as Zurbarán and Velázquez, and Barbara Hepworth's sculptural megaliths. Piccioli replaced the house's austere aesthetic with bold colours and sculptural silhouettes.
