Nine EU countries urge Brussels to extend EES border check flexibility past 2026

Nine European countries — Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland — sent a joint letter dated July 7 to Internal Affairs Commissioner Magnus Brunner urging an extension of the EU's Entry/Exit System emergency mechanism beyond its September 6, 2026 expiry. The countries say the system's first months have exposed "significant difficulties." The emergency mechanism allows border authorities to temporarily suspend biometric data collection to ease congestion.
