When I was a kid, Tim Curry ’s Pennywise the Clown scared the Hell out of me. With that cackling, gravelly voice, that bizarre, bulbous head, and the way he would just appear out of nowhere, Pennywise gave me nightmares at an age where I was definitely too young to watch. But when I revisited the movie decades later, I realized that, while Curry’s performance was still terrifying, the 1990 ABC TV movie that contained it was kind of terrible. The acting was often hokey and melodramatic while the non-Pennywise scares were all very lame — not boring, just corny .

It's almost been a week since PlayStation announced it would stop producing physical game discs beginning in 2028 , and the backlash hasn't shown any signs of slowing down. Rather than immediately returning to social media after making one of its most controversial announcements in years, Sony 's gaming division went quiet across its official accounts as criticism continued to pour in. That silence finally ended this week, but instead of addressing the controversy surrounding physical media, PlayStation returned with a promotional post highlighting its upcoming FlexStrike wireless fight stick . Fans had other ideas.

AI images, videos and writing used to be relatively easy to spot. There were too many fingers, warped backgrounds, strange nonsensical text and other visual artefacts that really quickly gave the AI game away. Deepfake videos often had delayed lip-syncing and AI-generated writing felt repetitive and formulaic, like reading a clunky LinkedIn post.

But AI has improved. A lot of AI-generated images, videos and messages now look convincing enough to fool even the most careful observers and experts. Which means some of the older tricks for spotting what's AI and what's not no longer work as reliably as they once did.

So this isn't about spotting signs and glitches. It's about taking extra steps to verify what you're seeing and hearing. We can't rely on zooming in to see six fingers in a strange-looking ad anymore. We need to know what questions to ask and which tools to use when something doesn't feel quite right.

Fact-checking Facebook pages

(Image credit: Shutterstock / mundissima ) AI-generated content is all over Facebook, particularly photos and videos designed to trigger a strong emotional response.

In May, a Full Fact investigation examined pages sharing AI-generated stories about UK politicians and found that many were managed from outside the UK, despite using names that sounded British. The posts featured heartwarming tales of politicians donating millions, rescuing dogs or helping sick children. None of it was true.

One useful tool in situations like this is Facebook's Page Transparency feature. Found within a page's profile, it can reveal where a page is managed from, when it was created, whether it has changed names in the past and other clues about who is really behind it. If those details don't match the image the page is trying to project, that's often a good reason to be sceptical.

Spotting scams on LinkedIn

(Image credit: LinkedIn) Job scams aren't new, but AI is making them harder to spot. Scammers can now generate realistic recruiter messages, professional-looking profiles and convincing emails on a huge scale.

Some recent campaigns have even imitated LinkedIn notifications and job alerts, using urgency and curiosity to pressure people into clicking malicious links or sharing sensitive information.

Before responding to an unexpected job offer, do some basic checks. Is the recruiter connected to a real company? Does their profile look legitimate? Does the business exist on Companies House? Taking a few minutes to verify the opportunity could save a lot of trouble later.

Verifying viral videos

(Image credit: Getty Images / We Are) Deepfake videos are getting eerily realistic. At normal speed, an AI-generated video may now look completely authentic. But you could try increasing the playback speed , which is when subtle inconsistencies can become easier to spot. Watch for lip movements that don't quite match the speech, unnatural blinking, strange pacing or facial movements that feel slightly out of sync with the audio you’re hearing.

It's also worth paying attention to facial expressions. Now, of course no one reacts perfectly all the time, but if a person's expressions consistently feel disconnected from what they're saying, it may be worth investigating further.

Investigating AI influencers

(Image credit: Xicoia) Sometimes the answer is hiding in plain sight. You just need to know where to look. AI influencers, AI-assisted fashion shoots and AI-generated advertising campaigns are often disclosed by brands and creators, but the information could be hard to find in a caption, hashtag, profile description or small print. For example, lifestyle publisher and brand SheerLuxe creates AI-generated content and influencers under the name Sheerluxe lab .

You could also try a reverse image search. Uploading an image to Google Images can sometimes show you where it first appeared online, if it’s been altered and whether the person in the image actually exists anywhere else on the internet. If an influencer only appears in AI-generated content and nowhere else, that’s a pretty big sign they might be completely made up.

The US is about to get one of the cheapest electric vehicle s ever offered for sale, as the Stellantis Group has confirmed that the tiny Fiat Topolino will be available Stateside.

Starting from just $13,995 (plus a $990 destination fee), the compact electric runaround features an equally minuscule 5.4kWh battery pack that delivers just 46 miles of range on a full charge. There's also a distinct lack of creature comforts.

Based on the Citroën Ami, the glorified golf cart is designed to offer a mobility solution for busy European cities, with the model classed as a light quadricycle ( category L6e ) that sees the law regard it more like a four-wheeled scooter or moped than a traditional passenger car.

That said, micromobility options like this are on the rise in the USA, where a craze for golf carts seems to be sweeping the nation.

According to a report by Today , residents of affluent neighborhoods are using electric carts for everything from grocery shopping trips to school drop-offs.

Golf cart manufacturer Club Car says the market value has soared from $1 billion pre-pandemic to more than $5 billion today.

Fiat hopes to cash in on this boom, with a range of stylish Topolinos that arguably have slightly more character than your average golf course transportation.

Analysis: Cute, but not really a car

(Image credit: Fiat) Thanks to its restricted top speed, diminutive proportions, and limited crash safety features, the Fiat Topolino isn't really classed as a traditional "car" in North America.

In fact, should customers want to use it on public roads, they will have to pay for a special conversion kit to raise the top speed to 25 mph and make it street legal on roads with speed limits of 35mph or less.

According to CNBC , Stellantis won't charge extra for this, but a mandatory destination fee of $990 will see the final price increase to $14,985.

The impossibly cute car, which roughly translates to "little mouse" from its native Italian, will also go on sale in the UK, with prices starting from £8,995.

Numerous models and special editions have already been touted, including a Sport edition that adds bespoke wheels, colors, and badges.

Fiat also unveiled a Multiplina concept (see above) that takes the Topolino platform and stretches it to act as "the missing link between a Topolino and a car," according to its maker.

There's no word on when we will see that go into production, but order books for the standard micro machine are already open in most markets.

The brain's memory center may come "prewired," rather than being built from scratch after birth, a new study in mice finds.

The research, published in April in the journal Nature Communications , offers a new perspective on a long-standing question in neuroscience: Does the brain begin as a blank slate and build memories by adding connections through experience, or does it come with built-in wiring? The new research focused on the hippocampus , a seahorse-shaped structure deep in the brain that's essential for forming memories.

Rather than supporting either theory directly, the research points to the latter idea but adds a significant twist.

The researchers focused on a region of the hippocampus called cornu ammonis 3 (CA3), which plays a central role in storing and recalling memories. A trait known as plasticity enables neurons within CA3 to continuously strengthen and weaken their connections and thus strengthen or weaken different memories.

The team examined mouse brain tissue collected shortly after birth, during adolescence or during adulthood. They found that early in life, hippocampal networks are densely wired, with many neurons hyperconnected in a seemingly random pattern. As the brain matures, these haphazard networks become sparser yet more structured as connections are pruned. This pruning begins soon after birth, with significant declines in connectivity by adolescence.

The finding discounts the idea that the hippocampus starts out as a blank slate, or "tabula rasa."

"We find, in a nutshell, that the system is not a tabula rasa, as we thought originally, where you can just write information and then at some point, this information fills the system," said study co-author Peter Jonas , a neuroscientist at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria. "Rather, it starts out as a tabula plena [full slate] and then becomes more sparser and specifically connected."​​

This pattern may help to explain why we remember so little from infancy .

Memories are thought to be stored within networks of neurons that fire together, representing specific experiences. In a young brain, however, these connections between neurons, called synapses, behave differently, the study suggests. In young brain tissue, a single input could cause a neuron to fire, the team found, while in mature networks, neurons typically require multiple inputs to fire.

(Image credit: Jake Watson / ISTA) Jonas said the team was surprised by not only the early pruning of connections but also how strong those early connections were. "You might think that early in development, you have poor synapses and weak synapses, but we found the opposite," he told Live Science.

This excitability comes at a cost, however: When neurons are activated too easily, different experiences can trigger overlapping patterns of activity. If that overlap is too great, the brain may struggle to distinguish one memory from another. Instead of forming distinct networks, it may generate broader, less-specific memories. In other words, the system is very active but not very precise.

This imprecision may affect behavior, too. For example, rodent studies show that young animals learn to fear an area of a cage where they received a mild shock, freezing when they return to it. But unlike adults, who freeze at that exact location, young animals also have this response in similar environments — so the memory is there, but it's not precise.

(Image credit: Jake Watson / ISTA) As the brain matures, neurons become more selective and require multiple inputs to fire. The result is more distinct, separate networks that translate to specific and stable memories. So in regard to the inability to recall early childhood, it may be that our earliest memories are too poorly defined to be retained in the long term.

The findings are consistent with a growing body of research on how memory develops, said Hauður Freyja Ólafsdóttir, an assistant professor at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour at Radboud University in the Netherlands.

"It's exciting on multiple fronts," Ólafsdóttir, who was not involved in the study, told Live Science. "There is plenty of developmental psychology work that suggests that memory becomes more specific with age. And so it's kind of interesting that now, at the circuit level, we're also seeing that the connectivity patterns are becoming sparser."

So what drives brain wiring before birth? That dense, early connectivity may result from a genetically programmed developmental process. Then, after birth, experience refines the wiring, Jonas suggested.

The findings do not rule out the possibility that experiences before birth leave lasting traces in the brain. But Ólafsdóttir thinks those early forms of learning rely on different neural systems than mature hippocampal circuits.

"I'm not disputing that they're there and that they have influence," she said, referencing prenatal experiences. "They leave a trace, let's say, in our brain and probably in our psychology even." But those traces may not resemble the detailed memories formed later in life.

When asked whether the connections that form before birth represent true memories or are just a byproduct of prenatal development, Jonas said, "The latter is more likely."

The "full slate" may give the brain a crucial head start by enabling neurons to quickly link different types of information, such as sights, sounds and smells. If the brain began as a blank slate, neurons might be too sparsely connected to find each other, making early communication difficult, the study authors think.

By starting with an overconnected network, the hippocampus may ensure that the necessary wiring is already in place, Jonas theorized.

Moscow will halt diesel exports until the end of July in an attempt to shield its energy markets from the impact of its war with Ukraine, after a wave of drone attacks in Russia squeezed domestic fuel supplies.

The restrictions are likely to have a knock-on effect on diesel prices in Europe, pushing up costs for farmers, haulers and, ultimately, consumers.

Speaking at a government meeting chaired by President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced that Russia had “today introduced a ban on diesel fuel exports” to “increase supplies to the domestic market.” He added that Russia would begin importing petroleum products in July and expand production by using lower-environmental-grade fuels as part of a package aimed at easing domestic shortages.

The export ban followed several days of Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure.

The timing is not great for Europe. Diesel markets have remained tight since March due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz amid the war in Iran. Russia is the world’s second-largest diesel exporter, and while the EU no longer imports Russian diesel directly because of sanctions, a squeeze on Russian exports is likely to ripple through global markets by increasing competition for fuel from elsewhere. That could sustain pressure on fuel costs for diesel-intensive industries on the continent.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday that Ukrainian forces had hit oil facilities in the Saratov region and Tatarstan as part of what he called a campaign of “fully justified” retaliation for Russia’s attacks on Ukraine. “Russians must feel that their state is waging this war,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.

On Tuesday, Gazprom said it was repairing damage to the Krasnodarskaya compressor station serving the Blue Stream pipeline to Turkey after a drone strike. A day earlier, Ukraine targeted Russia’s largest refinery in Omsk, more than 2,500 kilometers from the front line.

Novak had already warned Tuesday that Russia’s fuel market remained under pressure because of peak summer demand and unplanned refinery outages, instructing regional authorities and energy companies to prevent supply disruptions.

The restrictions will remain in place through July 31.
