Toxic Algae Bloom Forms Giant Green Swirl in Baltic Sea, Scientists Warn

Satellite images of the Baltic Sea show a massive green swirl that scientists identify as a rapid bloom of phytoplankton, including toxic cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). The cyanobacteria can produce highly harmful toxins dangerous to humans and animals. The phenomenon is visible from orbit and may look striking, but carries serious ecological and health risks.
