Ancient feeding neuropeptides control brood care behaviour in ants

Pharmacological screening and behavioural tests in ants identified two ancient feeding-related neuropeptides with opposing roles in regulating brood care. The neuropeptides link an ant's nutritional state to age-dependent shifts in parenting behaviour. The findings shed new light on how social insect behaviour evolved from basic metabolic signals.
