Double lung transplants extend survival in stage 4 lung cancer patients
Surgeons and oncologists at Northwestern Medicine offered double lung transplants to stage 4 lung cancer patients whose disease had not spread beyond the lungs and who had exhausted other treatment options. Historically, advanced lung cancer patients were excluded from transplant programmes due to high recurrence rates and low survival odds. The new study suggests a transplant strategy used during Covid-19 could be a viable lifesaving option for this group.
