Eastern Mediterranean sperm whales have developed their own distinct dialect

Sound recordings have revealed that sperm whales in the eastern Mediterranean use a sped-up version of the click pattern — known as a coda — employed by their western counterparts. Until now, all Mediterranean sperm whales were believed to share a single cultural group defined by a common coda. The finding suggests these populations have developed distinct dialects, mirroring the way human communities diverge linguistically.
