Croatia's Zrmanja Canyon: where the Winnetou westerns were filmed in the 1960s

The Zrmanja River canyon in Croatia is one of Europe's most spectacular karst landscapes, with turquoise water and limestone cliffs that resemble the American Wild West. In the 1960s, filmmakers chose it as a key location for the iconic Winnetou film series. The river runs roughly 69 km from its source at the foot of Mount Poštak. Today the canyon draws nature lovers and film fans alike, far from Croatia's crowded coastal resorts.
