Wuppertal's suspended railway turns 125 and remains a city icon
The Wuppertal Schwebebahn, Germany's suspended monorail railway, is marking 125 years of operation, having been built over the narrow Wupper Valley when ground-level space ran out. Over its history it has carried royalty, daily commuters, tourists and even an elephant. It remains both a working transit line and a powerful symbol of local identity.
